Going PRO Apprenticeship Readiness Program
GST Michigan Works! intensive seven-week Apprentice Readiness training, funded by the State of Michigan Going PRO Skilled Trades Grant began in March 2018. Individuals participating in this one-of-a-kind training had the opportunity to gain the necessary and fundamental education, skills and knowledge in a program designed to enable the successful transition into a formal construction craft apprenticeship program.
On April 27, 2018, sixteen individuals successfully graduated from the Going PRO Apprenticeship Readiness program. Graduates were presented with a Certificate of Completion that acknowledged their hard work by special guest Russell Davis, Michigan State Director for the USDOL Office of Apprenticeship, and Howard Hipes, Director of Training from the Michigan Allied Craft Workers and Bricklayers Training Center. Information about apprenticeships in Michigan was provided, as well as praise and words of encouragement. Graduates had the opportunity to reflect on the experience.
As of May 25, 2018, half of the graduates successfully obtained employment with local unions, securing a wage of $20-$30 per hour. The remaining class participants will apply with local unions as soon as the application process is open.
